Kapil’s Visit to LaTrobe Uni November 4, 2010

It was a standing ovation for India’s cricket legend Kapil Dev when he walked into Agora theatre. He was simple and after greeting the audience, he started to answer questions posed at him.

“What was the greatest moment in your cricket life” one of the cricket enthusiasts asked him quickly.  Kapil’s replied that he felt very happy when he played his first match in 1978 where he represented his country, India.

One of his fan asked him who is the greatest player of all time. “ Sachin Tendulkar” was his reply and

“Sachin showed a mature playing and he played with good temperament and he enjoyed his game” he added.

The interviewer asked about his Melbourne experience when he played his first test in Australia. Kapil said, “ Melbourne is a vibrant city and I was amazed by the turn up of audience on that test match”.  He quickly laughed and mentioned that they lost that test match L

He advised students to be more passionate about what they do.  Kapil Dev inspired students to enjoy the cricket when they play. His view on the cricketer’s performance is that any cricketer should play game passionately and enjoy it.  Enjoy playing the cricket is more important than setting cricketing records!

Before wrapping up the interview, he advised Indian students to work towards boosting Australia’s image in India.

When the interview was finished, everybody was queuing to get his autograph.  I thank Latrobe International and sponsors of this event for giving students to meet Kapil Dev.

Tipping Point : La Trobe University May 4, 2010

Malcolm Gladwell in his book ” Tipping Point” explains how to propagate a message at lighting speed. ie  How to tip a message so that it would resonate. Just like “Google” popularity spread by word of mouth. Because of web, it is quite easy to tip a message/ad. How effectively an organisation utilises all the web tools & marketing strategies to tip a message determines their success in Marketing Propaganda. There are lots of ways to measure your performance of your marketing.

I find La Trobe has adopted effectively and more quickly in using those tools. All the tweets are through “HootSuite” an Twitter client which gives all the reports of usage of people. Performance measures like how long user spend on a link, location of user, visit count,etc are useful in measuring their performance.  Youtube videos are watched widely and similar statistics about user who watched their videos gives extensive information about popularity of university.

Those statistics can be used to build a data model  using  Fuzzy Logic & Neural Network to predict how many student will enroll in future and whereby University plans for infrastructure development and technology investment. I was amazed about data modelling and how organisation uses those statistical data and performance measures to narrow down their Marketing.

For example if somebody from Asia google about a keyword ( La Trobe University), based on location information organisation finds out that those students are likely to know more about our university and so we send our University representatives for a campaign. How smart !! ………………..This looks cool too!!

I am wondering why cant we monitor the performance of students and give them special attention so that we can decrease the attrition rate. All the assignment marks & lab marks may be periodically updated in a system and some data model can be built on it inorder to predict the performance of students.

I strongly recommend all the users should be aware of the fact that all your click are recorded ….even your visit to this blog.  Dont worry I use the statistics to improve my writing skills and how good am I to engage the user to express my thought ( I am sorry …. I am selfish :) :) )

Even all your google searches are recorded and Google clusters your search and bundles it with other informations ( time, location, frequency of that keyword) and sells it somebody !!

Believe me we are making Google and Facbook  …………… Rich…every second Mate !!!
